PV Sindhu among Top 10: The Badminton World Federation (BWF) has announced their recent world ranking after it officially updated the unfrozen rankings on February 2, 2021.

At present, Rio 2016 silver-medallist Pusarla Venkata Sindhu is India’s best-placed shuttler in the world. She is on no.7 in world rank in the women’s singles. The top three positions in women’s single is taken by Tai Tzu Ying from Chinese Taipei, Chen Yu Fei from China, and Carolina Marin from Spain.
Among men’s singles ranking, Srikanth Kidambi proceeded to 13th position from his earlier 14th position, while B. Sai Praneeth’s ranking dropped one position to 17 by earlier 16.
The biggest progress made by Indian players was in the mixed-doubles category, where the pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Ashwini Ponnappa, who had become the first Indian mixed doubles pair to reach the semi-finals of a world tour Super 1000 event at the Thailand Open, jumped 16 positions to reach at 19 positions from their earlier ranking of 36. The duo had stunned fifth-seeded Malaysian combination of Chan Peng Soon and Goh Liu Ying in the quarter-finals.
In the women’s doubles category, Ashwini Ponnappa and Sikki Reddy dropped one place to rank 29th, whereas, in the men’s doubles category, the pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty retained their 10th position.
Indian badminton was in the limelight when London 2012 bronze-medallist Saina Nehwal became the first player from the country to top world No.1 position in 2015, along with Kidambi Srikanth who positioned on the top rank in men’s singles in 2017.
The Badminton World Federation world rankings reopened after the BWF World Tour Finals concluded on Sunday. Last March, the BWF had put their world rankings on hold saying that the standings as of March 17 will be the basis for entry and seedings when it restarts the international calendar.
