A 10-year-old girl's birthday celebration in Punjab turned tragic when she passed away due to consuming a cake that was ordered online from a local bakery called 'Cake Kanha' in Patiala. Although the cake was supposed to be a delicious treat for the celebration, it contained a harmful substance that led to her untimely demise.
The incident that took place on March 24 only came to light in the media on March 30. The family of the deceased girl alleged that the health department did not help them after they took the cake sample on March 27 to get it tested, suspecting toxin substances in it.
Artificial Sweetener in Lethal Proportions
Following the investigation and forensic analysis, officials revealed a disturbing truth about the cake that claimed the life of the young girl. It was discovered that the cake innocently ordered online from a bakery in Patiala, contained a significant concentration of saccharine, an artificial sweetener.
The District Health Officer, Dr. Vijay Jindal, disclosed that the cake, upon testing, exhibited alarmingly high levels of saccharine. While saccharine is a commonly used sweetening agent in food and beverages, its excessive presence in the cake led to dire consequences. High doses of saccharine have been known to induce a rapid spike in blood glucose levels, posing severe health risks, particularly when ingested unknowingly in significant amounts.
10-Year-Old Girl Dies After Eating Her Birthday Cake
The birthday celebration of Manvi, a class 5 student, soon turned into a nightmare and a life-long ache for her family as a chocolate cake ordered online through a food-delivery app turned out to be contaminated. The incident led to Manvi's untimely death, just hours after celebrating her birthday.
The videos circulating online show Manvi cutting the cake with loved ones.
As per the reports, the whole family was feeling unwell within a few hours of eating the cake and started vomiting. While Manvi's younger sister experienced vomiting soon after eating the cake, Manvi's condition reportedly worsened throughout the night as she struggled to even breathe. It was when her family rushed her to the hospital that she was declared "brought dead."
The exact cause of Manvi's death is yet to be declared, considering the pending post-mortem examination and tests on a cake sample collected by authorities. The family of the deceased alleged that the name of the bakery in the bill was different from the name of the actual shop which suggests it could be the fly-by-night cloud kitchen that has been gaining popularity for its flexible work in online food delivery culture.
The police said that the name of the bakery keeps changing on Zomato and the police are monitoring the concept of the cloud kitchen.
The family of the deceased also alleged that the health department refused to take samples of the cake provided by them for testing by telling them that the food department would only collect the food samples from the bakery where the cake was baked. However, later, the food official from the health department clarified that after the family filed a formal complaint with police officials and the health department, teams were formed to collect the sample of the cake from the deceased girl's house.
The Patiala police are currently investigating the source of the cake and the cause of Manvi's death. No arrests have been made as of yet. This incident has sparked outrage and renewed concerns about food safety regulations, particularly for online food vendors.
