The Wanowrie police in Pune took swift action as they apprehended an autorickshaw driver involved in a horrifying incident. The survivor, an IT professional, had booked an Uber ride at 3:30 a.m. to commute from her office on Saswad Road to her residence in Handewadi.
An IT professional seeking a ride from her workplace on Saswad Road to her Handewadi residence took an auto. However, the accused auto driver lied about his phone's battery is dead and manipulated the survivor into opening the app. He then demanded money from her during the ride, deviating from the intended drop-off location. The woman became suspicious upon realising the driver's deceitful actions.
Pune Auto Driver Arrested
Acting swiftly, the woman immediately alerted her husband and a friend about the distressing situation. The auto driver halted near Little Flower School in Hadapsar, where he molested the woman and attempted to rape her. However, displaying remarkable courage, she bit off one of the driver's fingers in self-defence.
The driver apologised, promising to take her home. Eventually, near her residence at Kalepadal's railway gate, the woman recognised the area and bravely jumped out of the auto-rickshaw. Her husband, tracking her location through GPS, arrived promptly and pursued the fleeing rickshaw. The chase ended with the rickshaw overturning, enabling the woman's husband to apprehend the accused auto driver and hand him over to the Wanowrie police.
According to Senior Police Inspector Pathare, the Wanowrie police have filed charges against the driver, including abduction, attempted rape, sexual harassment, and attempted disrobing of a woman.
The Wanowrie police have filed a case against the accused under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including Section 354 (criminal force against a woman with intent to outrage her modesty), Section 354B (assault or use of criminal force against a woman with intent to disrobe), Section 509 (act intended to insult the modesty of a woman), Section 376 (rape), Section 511 (attempted theft), and Section 364 (kidnapping or abducting).
Aniket Nana Saheb Munjal, the accused from Hadapsar, has been remanded in police custody until June 26th.
