Pune Gets 100 Women Auto Drivers And A Dedicated Auto Stand

Pune will welcome its first 100 female auto drivers. Also, the Pune will dedicate an auto-stand to women in Nigdi.

Pune 100 Women Auto Drivers

Pune took another step towards women's empowerment as it welcomed its first 100 female auto drivers. Also, the city will dedicate an auto-stand at the Bhakti Shakti Chowk in Nigdi for them.  Maharashtra Rickshaw Panchayat took this decision to launch auto rickshaw's driven by women. The stand at Nigdi will be called Krantijyoti Savitribai Phule Autorickshaw Stand the TOI reported. The aim of this initiative is to make women more empowered and financially independent. The stand was launched on February 6, 2020, and will accommodate 100 women drivers and their autos on the premises. Three years ago a similar effort had been initiated which was later dissolved the Pune Mirror reported.

All the women drivers have a license and have been provided with proper training. “A year ago, our organization helped over 100 women from across the city to get licences, permits to drive autorickshaws. It was difficult for them to pick up passengers from the many men-dominated stands so we started this for them", President of Rickshaw Panchayat, Baba Kamble said.

The pink rickshaws will run on meter. The women drivers will drive around the city but to ensure the safety of women drivers, the service will be provided from 10am to 8pm as per reports.

The rickshaws have special features like GPS trackers and panic buttons. These features were installed specially for the safety of women. At first, these rickshaws were launched in Ranchi in 2013 by the Government of India. Further, Other cities also introduced pink rickshaws. The drivers are professionally trained and go through stringent legal verification and documentation.

The aim of this initiative is to empower women and make them self sufficient.

In Ranchi, the initiative was started after the 2012 Delhi gang-rape case, when the Jharkhand police first launched 100 pink roofed autorickshaws for the transportation of women passengers. The aim of this initiative is to empower women and make them self sufficient.
