The residents of Tamil Nadu’s Thulasendrapuram performed a special puja at Sri Dharma Sastha temple for Kamala Harris' victory in the United States Presidential election. Several people came together to pray for her victory. Villagers have even put up flex boards with her pictures across the village.

Thulasendrapuram is the ancestral village of Kamala Harris. Her mother Shyamala Gopalan and her family belong to this village. Harris' chitthi (mother’s younger sister), Dr Sarala Gopalan, and other relatives live in other parts of Chennai.
Harris in her memoir recalls her visit to Chennai and walking on the Besant Nagar beach along with her grandfather P V Gopalan, a former civil servant.
Organisers of the puja event
The organisers of the special puja also arranged the annadhanam (distribution of food) on the temple premises. According to the Times of India, around 200 people participated in the event. J Sudakaran, one of the organisers of the event said that they prepared and served ‘sambar idli’ to people because it is the favourite food of Harris.

Harris has recently said that among the Indian dishes idli with a “really good Sambar” is her all-time favourite south Indian food. In a video posted on Twitter on Sunday, Harris was asked to list her favourite dishes from India. She answered, “So South Indian, it would be Idli with… a really good Sambar, and then North Indian – probably any kind of Tikka.”

Villagers on Kamala Harris
Villagers also expressed their wish that Harris would visit them after her victory in the US election. Sudakaran added, “We hope that she will become the vice-president of the country and will make our country, particularly the residents of Thulasendrapuram, proud.”
V Senthilkumaran, a native of the village said, “The temple is the native temple of Harris’s family. It is a very small one and a few days back the villagers decided to do special pooja in the temple on Tuesday, the voting day” reported the News18. Senthilkumaran added, “We all want Kamala to win the election and we hope to get the results this week.”
