Lakhimpur Kheri violence: Protests broke outside the Uttar Pradesh Bhavan in New Delhi today, after the detention of Priyanka Gandhi by the Uttar Pradesh police. Gandhi was on her way to meet the family of four protesting farmers who were allegedly ran over by Union Minister, Ajay Kumar Mishra's son's car.
Members of the Women Congress, All India Kisan Sabha and All India Democratic Women's Association staged a protest outside UP Bhavan in the capital. The protest was against Lakhimpur Kheri violence which led to the death of eight people including four farmers, who were protesting against the three farm bills. The protesters demanded sacking of the minister and arrest of his son.
"Along with our national chairperson, youth Congress and kariyakartas protested the killing of those eight people and forceful arrest of Priyanka Gandhi in Uttar Pradesh," Natasha Sharma, social media coordinator of the All India Mahila Congress, told SheThePeople.
Sharma was present there amongst the protesters who surrounded the UP Bhawan today. She said that the protest was against a 'bereham sarkar'. "Priyanka Gandhi was silently going to meet the injured farmers and share the feeling of solidarity when she was arrested yesterday," added Sharma.
According to a report by The Tribune, an FIR has been lodged against Union Minister Ajay Kumar Mishra's son and several others. However, the details of the sections is not known yet. It was also reported that Minister Mishra has denied any role of his son in the incident. Earlier, Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath had called the incident at Lakhimpur "unfortunate".
Priyanka Gandhi was on her way to meet the farmers in Lakhimpur when she was detained in Sitapur. Since then she is held at Provincial Arms Constabulary (PAC) Guest House.
