The University of Allahabad appointed professor Sangita Srivastava as the new regular vice-chancellor, making her the first woman to hold the position at the 133-year-old university. Srivastava took charge of her new position on Monday. Before her appointment, the post was being handled by officiating vice-chancellors ever since the last regular incumbent professor RL Hangloo tendered his resignation on December 31, 2019.

After taking the charge of her new position she said, “All efforts would be made to restore the lost glory of the institution by bettering its NIRF ranking and improving the academic environment and promote quality research in the university as well as in its constituent colleges.” Srivastava further added, “To make that happen, filling vacant posts of teachers and non-teaching staff would be a priority,” HT reported.
The new VC also said that she is looking forward to improve the functioning of labs and departments, Srivastava also aims to effectively implement the New Education Policy. Along with that, she would like to have several brainstorming sessions so that the transformation as suggested in the policy can be attained, especially making undergraduate courses of four-year duration instead of the three years. She also wants to enable the students to pick the stream of their choice whether it is Arts or Science.
Professor Sangita Srivastava had joined the AU as a lecturer in 1989 for the Science department. She played an instrumental role in the department getting a new building. She took over as the head of the department in 2002. In 2018 she appointed as the Vice-Chancellor of Prof Rajendra Singh University. Now after her new appointment, she has been relieved of her previous role on the orders of Governor Anandiben Patel. Prof KN Singh, the present VC of Uttar Pradesh Rajarshi Tandon Open University, took charge as VC of Prof Rajendra Singh University on Monday.
