A five-member delegation of the Congress party met the families of the deceased farmers in Lakhimpur on Wednesday, 6 October. Party leader Priyanka Gandhi, who had been detained in Sitapur since Monday, had joined the delegation on Wednesday evening.
Congress leader Sachin Pilot was reportedly detained in Moradabad while on his way to Lakhimpur. He was taken to the government guest house by the District Magistrate for discussions. Congress leader Harish Rawat too reportedly promised to storm Lakhimpur with Uttarakhand Congress workers in 1000 vehicles.
As many as eight persons, including four farmers, had died in Lakhimpur on Sunday. An FIR under the charges of murder and rioting has been filed against the son of Union Minister Ajay Teni Misra, who was allegedly driving the car that had run over three farmers in Lakhimpur.
Earlier in the day, MoS Ajay Misra – whose son Ashish Misra has been accused of mowing down farmers at Lakhimpur Kheri – met Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi. On the other hand, PM Narendra Modi spoke to state CM Yogi Adityanath to take stock of the situation. The CM briefed PM Modi about the whole incident and what measures the state administration had taken.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court took suo moto cognisance of the situation in Lakhimpur. The court will take up the case of the violence in Lakhimpur on October 7. A bench of the apex court will also look into whether the Right to Protest is "absolute or not". Just days ago, the court had lashed out at the farmer leaders for the "perpetual" protests and then for "strangulating" the national capital.
