A woman from Assam recently took to Facebook to call out an online portal that rejected her job application. A government-run platform called National Seed Corporation Limited (NSCL) refused to accept the said woman's job application, the reason being "nothing but my surname" which is 'Chutia', she claimed.
Priyanka Chutia (pronounced as 'Sutiya') hails from Assam's Gogamukh and was trying to apply for a job with NSCL. After repeated attempts, however, her registration was left incomplete. The portal of the organisation kept rejecting her name as a valid candidate and asked her to use "proper naming" words. The software warned her to not use 'slang' in place of the surname.

Priyanka, who holds a Master's degree in Agricultural Economics and Farm Management, took to social media to narrate her ordeal. "The reason (for rejection of application) is nothing but my surname and the portal keeps on saying to use ‘proper naming’ words. I feel really sad and frustrated at times explaining people that I am not using slang but it’s a community where I belong,” she wrote.
“It’s not slang”
She added that the community she is from is called Chutia, one of the Assam's oldest ethnic groups. Explaining that this is not the first time something like this happened to her, the Assamese woman further said, "We really need to do something to identify ourselves and make recognisable nationally. This is not the first time. Imagine yourself going for a presentation and the panel laughs at you at the very first introduction speech."

After Chutia wrote to NSCL, the organisation finally took notice of the situation and accepted her application. The woman, however, said that she wanted to raise awareness about the issue. NSCL later assured that this was a technical flaw. "There was a technical flaw in the code filtration of the name of the candidates which was rectified in early stages," NSCL said in an email statement, Times Now reported.
