It is a proud moment for the country as President Droupadi Murmu was awarded the highest civilian award of the country Suriname in South America.

During Murmu's recent visit to the country Suriname, she was awarded the Grand Order of the Chain of the Yellow Star. Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated her and said that "this special gesture" from Suriname was a symbol of the enduring friendship between the two countries.

This award was previously given to Sri Sri Ravishankar for his humanitarian work by Suriname's President Chandrikapersad Santokhi.

President Droupadi Murmu Awarded

Murmu took to her social media and said she is very honoured to receive this award and added that the recognition holds tremendous significance for herself and the citizens of India. She dedicated the award to her 1.4 million countrymen and the Indian-Surinamese community, as they have played a vital role in the endowment of the two countries' friendship.

She also talks about the similarities between India's and Suriname's cultures and added that she felt like she was at home.

The President also said in a tweet that she hopes that the Indian community will continue to fortify this relationship over the coming days and that each and every one of you will continue to serve as a link between Suriname and India. She extended an invitation to the Surinamese on this occasion so they may visit India, observe its progress, and take part in the development as well.

President of Suriname Santokhi said that Suriname celebrates the rich culture and heritage India has and that is the core bonding point between the two countries.

In Murmu's three-day visit to the country, she announced an extension of overseas citizenship (OCI) from the fourth generation to sixth generation. It is intended to help those people who came to Suriname to fetch OCI cards.
