Who Is Pravati Parida? First Woman To Become Odisha's Deputy CM

Bharatiya Janata Party leader Mohan Charan Majhi has been elected as the Chief Minister of Odisha. MLAs KV Singh Deo and Pravati Parida have been chosen as the deputy chief ministers. The State is set to witness its first BJP-led government and the first woman to become the deputy CM. Pravati Parida secured a victory over Biju Janata Dal (BJD) leader Dilip Kumar Nayak by 4,588 votes from Nimapara. The new government was sworn in at Janata Maidan in Bhubaneswar on June 12 with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the ceremony.

Pravati Parida: Lawyer Turned Politician Makes History

Born in 1967, Pravati Parida belongs to Nimapara in the Puri district of Odisha. She has an educational background in law from Bhubaneswar's Utkal University and a Master of Arts degree in public administration.

Parida enrolled as an advocate in the Odisha High Court in 1995. After practising law for many years, she joined politics with the Bharatiya Janata Party and first served as the women's wing president of the BJP in Odisha.

This is the fourth time Parida contested the polls from the Nimapara seat. The 57-year-old first contested in 2009 but garnered only 4.52% of the votes. In 2014 and 2019, the BJP leader was defeated by BJD's Samir Ranjan Dash.

Pravati Parida is reportedly married to Shyam Sundar Nayak, a former government employee. She has over ₹95 lakhs in movable and over ₹97 lahks in immovable assets, according to her profile on the portal MyNeta.info.

The Bharatiya Janata Party overturned the 24-year-long term of the Biju Janata Dal in Odisha and came into power for the first time in the State. The saffron party secured The BJP received 1,00,64,827 votes in the State.
