In a recent public address on Wednesday, Pope Francis condemned pornography and that it was a "dangerous vice". He added that sex is a "gift of God" which is being "undermined by pornography". He defended love against lust saying that porn can lead to dangerous addictive behaviour. Read on to learn more about his views.
The 87-year-old religious leader said, "Lust plunders, it robs, it consumes in haste, it does not want to listen to the other but only to its own need and pleasure; lust judges every courtship a bore, it does not seek that synthesis between reason, drive and feeling that would help us to conduct existence wisely."
Pope asked priests and nuns to delete porn
This is not the first time that Pope spoke against pornography. In October 2022, he called the priests and nuns who were addicted to porn and said that soft porn weakens the priestly heart. He advised the priests and nuns to delete porn from their phones.
He said, "Each of you thinks if you've had the experience or had the temptation of digital pornography. It's a vice that so many people have, so many laymen, so many lay women, and even priests and nuns." He continued saying, "And I'm not just talking about criminal pornography like child abuse, where you see live cases of abuse: that's already degeneracy. But of the more 'normal' pornography."
Praised sex as a gift from god
However, in April 2023, he praised sex as one of the most beautiful things given to humans by God. He also talked about masturbation saying, "To express yourself sexually is a richness. So anything that detracts from real sexual expression lessens you and depletes this richness."
Universal ban on surrogacy
Recently, Pope Francis called for a universal ban on surrogacy. He said that it is a despicable practice that allows the commercialisation of pregnancy. He said the life of the unborn child should be protected and not "turned into an object of trafficking.”
The Pope said, "I consider despicable the practice of so-called surrogate motherhood, which represents a grave violation of the dignity of the woman and the child, based on the exploitation of situations of the mother’s material needs." He said that a child is a gift and “never the basis of a commercial contract." "At every moment of its existence, human life must be preserved and defended," he added.
