Pooja Gupta, a resident of Baraut town in Uttar Pradesh has filed a police case against celebrity hair stylist Jawed Habib for spitting in her hair.
The incident took place at a workshop in Muzzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh when Habib was styling Gupta's hair on stage. In the viral video from the stage, Habib is heard telling his audience, "If there is a shortage of water, use saliva" as he spat in Gupta's hair. The woman spoke to the media and said that she felt humiliated by Habib's actions in front of a crowd.
According to reports, the case against Habib is filed under sections of assault of the Indian Penal Code and Epidemic Disease Act, 1897. The woman in her interviews said that she was present in the seminar before being invited on the stage and had asked a question to Habib. Even before the spitting episode, the woman claimed that Habib was mistreating her on stage. She said, "He pushed my head, to which I objected and requested him not to do that again as I am a Cervical patient." She added that her husband Sajeev Gupta recorded everything on his phone. When the woman stepped down from the stage, Habib's assistant reportedly told the woman that Habib was just joking and when the woman raised objection, she was not supported by Habib's team or the organisers.
Gupta also told the media that she has lost her reputation after the incident. She said, "My clients are telling me I have lost my reputation. Others are saying I - a nobody - has taken on a celebrity like Jawed Habib and stand no chance in the parlour business now. My students are telling me Habib has spit in your hair, what reputation are you left with now."
The woman runs a parlour named Vashika Bueaty Parlour in Baraut. Ever since the video went viral, netizens have been calling out the celebrity stylist for being unhygienic. The National Commission for Women has also taken cognisance of the matter and has asked the police to take action in the matter.
Amid the controversy, Habib issued an apology on January 6, on his Instagram channel, for any hurt he may have caused. "Since these sessions are lengthy, we make them humourous. I apologise if my act hurt anyone," he said.
