Bhatt in the past had been vocal about her addiction and how she finally resorted to abstinence in December 2016. In an interview, Bhatt had said, “I was 45 and if I wanted to give myself 10 years of living, I had to quit now before I drank myself to the grave.” She added that she had to reclaim her sharper, brighter self which had got watered down by alcohol.
She also talked about how women don’t seek help in a matter like such because of the stigma. While openly speaking about her addiction, she had said that she wants to bust the stigma attached to alcoholism in India. “Women particularly are discouraged from seeking help because it's a matter of shame for the family.”
“We don't share our pain or frailties, we cover our weaknesses and it becomes cancer,” she added.
Talking about why some people get addicted to alcohol she had called it a socially accepted narcotic at business lunches and boardrooms. It is also caused by the high-stress profession in fast-paced city life where it becomes a reason to celebrate and cope.
