The death probe of Rupa Tirkey, Sahibganj police officer who allegedly died by suicide after harassment from colleagues, was handed over to Central Bureau of Investigation ( CBI ) on Wednesday.

Police Officer Rupa Tirkey Death Case:
- Rupa Tirkey was the officer-in-charge of the Sahibganj women’s police station. On May 3, she was found hanging at her official residence.
- On May 9, sub-inspector Shiv Kumar Kanaujia who was also a friend and colleague of Tirkey was arrested on the basis of alleged abetment of suicide".
- In June, Tirkey’s father moved to the Jharkhand High Court and filed a petition alleging that Rupa Tirkey's death was a murder.
- Her father also said in his statement that she was harassed by Pankaj Mishra, assembly representative of chief minister Hemant Soren, and another person named Dahu Yadav.
- Hemant Soren from BJP, the opposition party in Jharkhand along with the tribal rights groups took the case up and staged an outcry.
- The court then had set up a one-member judicial commission after the demands by her family, tribal groups and the Opposition.
- Rajiv Kumar, Oraon’s counsel said in his statement, "The bench of Justice SK Dwivedi on Wednesday directed a CBI probe. We had been highlighting that it was a rare case, wherein police started projecting it as a suicide from the very next day after her body was found in mysterious conditions."
- On September 1, the High Court directed the CBI to probe the Rupa Tirkey death case.
- The proceedings of the court took place virtually. After the hearing was over, the microphone of the petitioner’ counsel was still on and unmuted. The counsel was heard telling those sitting around him that he was “200% sure that the court would order a CBI probe in the case”.
- Justice Dwivedi then directed the petition to be put up before the chief justice for further ruling.
