Prime Minister Narendra Modi met the women of Sandeshkhali during his rally in West Bengal's Barasat, where he addressed the ongoing row involving Trinamool Congress leader Sheikh Shahjahan. Coming down heavily on the Mamata Banerjee-led government, PM Modi alleged, "Under TMC's rule, the women of this land have been tortured. Whatever happened in Sandeshkhali will put anyone to shame but the TMC government does not care about your issues. TMC is putting efforts to protect the accused of the people of Bengal."
Massive protests broke out in Sandeshkhali in February when several women came forward to accuse Sheikh Shahjahan of sexual assault, land grabbing, and unwarranted arrests of men. Shahjahan had also been accused of attacking Enforcement Directorate officials in January during a raid at his residence. The TMC leader has now been arrested.

TMC Is Protecting Sheikh Shahjahan, PM Modi Alleges
Prime Minister Modi hit out at the State government during his Barasat rally, insinuating that the accused in the ongoing Sandeshkhali case is being protected by the Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal government. The Sandeshkhali case has been a hot topic for debate between the leading Trinamool Congress and the Opposition, BJP.
PM Modi took several jibes at the State government, banking on the ongoing political tug-of-war to demonstrate the BJP's commitment to protecting the women of West Bengal. "The BJP government has decided to award life imprisonment for heinous crimes like rape. For easy registration of women's complaints, we have arranged for a 'Women Helpine', but the TMC govt is not letting it operate in West Bengal. This TMC government can never work for the welfare of women," he said.
PM Modi addressed the Sandeshkhali women at the rally saying, "TMC government can never protect women. TMC leaders have committed atrocities on the women of the state. TMC has full confidence in their leader but not in the women of West Bengal." He added, "The women of Bengal and the country are angry. This storm of Sandeshkhali will reach every part of West Bengal, and decimate the TMC across the state," he said, emphasising 'nari shakti' (woman power).
