Park So-dam, the South Korean actor who shot to international fame with the 2019 Oscar-winning film Parasite, was diagnosed with papillary thyroid cancer, as per reports this week. Her agency said in a statement that she has undergone surgery for the disease and is presently focused on recovery.
The 30-year-old will drop out of promotions for her upcoming film Special Delivery, a crime thriller that sees her in the lead.
So-dam's cancer diagnosis came following a routine health checkup, as per her agency's statement quoted by CNN.

Papillary thyroid cancer is understood as a common form of thyroid cancer and comes through as asymptomatic. It is more common in women than men, with the population in the 20-50 age group considered the most at risk. Surgery is the top choice for treatment of this type of cancer.
Park So-dam: Taking A Look At Her Body Of Work
So-dam is an actor recognised for her work in both independent and mainstream cinema. She drew in big successes in the year 2015, when she came to wide notice with her role in mystery film The Silenced. That year, she also starred in titles The Throne and The Priests.
She also has multiple credits to her name on television, including for shows A Beautiful Mind, Cinderella with Four Knights and Three Meals a Day: Mountain Village.

In Bong Joon-ho's Parasite, So-dam played the role of Kim Ki-jung, the Kim family's daughter, who impersonates a qualified art therapist serving a wealthy family. A black comedy, Parasite made sweeping wins during the award season that year, including the Oscars where it picked four honours. It markedly became the first-ever non-English language film to win the Best Picture award.
