India clinched a total of 17 medals at the World Para-Athletics Championships 2024 in Kobe, Japan, scripting history with the highest number the country has ever won. The athletes secured six gold, five silver and six bronze, placing India in the sixth position. China secured 87 medals, taking first place followed by Brazil (42), Uzbekistan (13), Great Britain (12) and the United States (24). At the 2023 edition of the Championships in Paris, India had won 10 medals.
Six Women Athletes Who Shone At World Para Athletics Meet 2024
Gold Medals:
Track and field athlete Deepthi Jeevanji set a new world record in the women’s 400m T20 category race as she clocked 55.07 seconds to clinch a gold. Deepthi surpassed the 55.12 seconds record set by USA’s Breanna Clark during the 2023 world championships. With her win, she secured a berth in the upcoming Paris Paralympics 2024.
Simran Sharma secured another gold in Women’s 200m T12, clocking her personal best of 24.95 seconds. In Women’s Club Throw F51, Ekta Bhyan won a gold medal with the season's best throw of 20.12m. The other gold winners are Mariyappan Thangavelu (Men’s High Jump T63), Sumit Antil (Men’s Javelin Throw F64), and Sachin Khilari (Men’s Shot Put F46).
Five Silver Medals:
Kashish Lakra finished second and secured a silver medal in club throw with a 14.56m mark. In Women's Shot Put, Bhagyashri Jadhav won another medal for India as she bagged a silver in the F34 category, hurling the iron ball to 7.52 metres. Yogesh Kathuniya (Men’s Discuss Throw F56), Nishad Kumar (Men’s High Jump T47), and Rinku (Men’s Javelin Throw F46) also won silvers.
Six Bronze Medals:
Track and field star Preethi Pal secured two bronze medals-- one each in Women’s 100m T35, and Women’s 200m T35. She grabbed India's first win in the latter event, etching her name in the history of sporting glory. Pal also became the first Indian to earn multiple medals in a single edition of the Championships. She earned herself a ticket to the Paris Paralympics 2024.

Dharambir (Men’s Club Throw F51), Navdeep (Men’s Javelin Throw F41), Ajeet Singh (Men’s Javelin Throw F46), and Sandeep (Men’s Javelin Throw F64), also took home a bronze medal each.
