Miffed Over Her 'Modern' Living, Pak Couple Kills Daughter: Details Here

In a shocking case, a Pakistani couple has been sentenced to life imprisonment by a court in Northern Italy for murdering their daughter. The couple killed their daughter because she refused an arranged marriage proposal. The daughter's quick adaptive nature to modern ways irked parents who wanted her to marry an older cousin back in Pakistan. Read on to learn more about the case.

Daughter's modern lifestyle irked parents

The 18-year-old daughter, who goes by the name Saman Abbas, was killed in May 2021. She was living in Novellara near Bologna when she disappeared. According to a tribunal in Reggio Emilia in central Italy, Abbas' parents ordered her murder and she was strangled by her uncle. Just the previous year, Abbas had rejected her parents' proposal to marry her older cousin. Moreover, in a social media post, Abbas alleged that her quick embrace of Western ways irked her parents. She shed off headscarf, dated a young man of her choice and posted a picture kissing him on the street. 

According to investigation officers, the kiss allegedly enraged her parents. Abbas herself had often expressed to her boyfriend that her life was in danger because she refused to marry her older cousin. 

How the murder was committed

In November 2020, Abbas reported to the Police against her parents. She was then sent to a shelter home by the social workers. However, in April 2021, she went to see her family, pick up her passport and start a new life with her boyfriend. It was then that the murder was committed. 

As per the surveillance camera, the murder was committed between April 30 to May 1, 2021. The footage showed five people leaving the family home with shovels, crowbars and buckets, before returning two and a half hours later. Noting Abbas' absence, her boyfriend alerted the Police who tried to search through the house but the family had already left for Pakistan. 

A year later Abbas' body was found with a broken neck in an abandoned farmhouse. Her brother told the Police that he had overheard his father talking about killing Abbas through his uncle. In 2023, Police arrested Abbas' father, Shabbar Abbas, her Uncle, Danish Hasnain and her two cousins all also involved in the crime. However, her mother, Nazia Shaheen, is a fugitive and is believed to be in Pakistan.
