Pakistan TikTok acid attack: A Pakistani woman, whose ex-husband attacked her with acid, allegedly for making TikTok videos, has passed away, local reports said Sunday. She succumbed to the injuries she sustained during the attack that occurred last month.
Identifying her as 19-year-old Rimsha, ARY News reports she battled burn injuries inflicted on her for three weeks.
According to reports from last month, Rimsha was seeking treatment at Dr Ruth KM Pfau Civil Hospital, where doctors said her upper torso had suffered 36 percent burns.
The accused Zeeshan, whom the now deceased influencer married in 2019 and had a divorce over WhatsApp in 2021, was reportedly stalking her. He was arrested following the attack in Kabari Chowk, Saeedabad in Karachi. Rimsha's family also alleged domestic violence and said they had approached the police previously for a complaint in the matter. However, they claimed he was protected since his father was a powerful figure.
Pakistan TikTok Acid Attack Woman Passes Away: Growing Concern Of Women's Safety
Rimsha's family said she was associated with the law profession and took a keen interest in making TikTok videos. Zeeshan too made these videos with her during their marriage. "Zeeshan became jealous of her and he grew insecure," the late influencer's mother was quoted saying by Samaa last month.
She said that in the early months of the young couple's marriage, Zeeshan began assaulting her daughter at home and in public, used to beat her up and leave her bruised. Post their divorce, Zeeshan allegedly stalked Rimsha, tried to prevent her from going to work and force her back to him.
On August 21, Rimsha's mother said she saw Zeeshan waiting outside their house with a bottle of liquid in his hand - acid, which he reportedly later threw on his ex-wife, severely burning her.
Rimsha's death comes only weeks following the mass assault of a woman TikToker by hundreds in Lahore on August 14. The incident, wherein a woman was mobbed and attacked while shooting a video, made international headlines, marking an urgent need for attention to women's safety in Pakistan.
