Pakistan Ramadan Stampede

  • At least 11 women and children have been killed in a stampede at a Ramadan event. Earlier on Friday, eight women and three children reportedly died.
  • Business owners as a part of good deeds during the holy month of Ramadan, hand out cash and food to the poor.
  • Hundreds of women and children attended the event. People panicked and desperately started pushing for food at an industrial area known as SITE or Sindh Industrial and Trading Estate.
  • During stampede, a few women and children fell into an open drain outside the factory, as per the local police official Mughees Hashmi.
  • Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah ordered an investigation into the deadly stampede that resulted. He asked for a report from Karachi Commissioner Muhammad Iqbal Memon. Shah said, “The administration should be informed about any distribution of ration and welfare work."
  • Earlier, also similar incidents occurred with the death toll amounting to 21 since last week.
  • It has become difficult for people to afford daily basic needs with rising inflation in the country. The scenario has been in several countries in Asia, including Pakistan.
  • Pakistan is facing a wheat crisis too. As per the report, the differences between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif`s government and other provincial governments is assumed to be the reason for the wheat crisis. Besides, the flour on priority is sold to hotels and other businesses. Shops are closed owing to the scarcity of food grains.
  • The government launched an initiative to distribute free flour among low-income families, as a measure to control the impact of inflation and skyrocketing poverty during Ramadan.
