Padma Sachdev, Padma Shri awardee and noted poet, author, passed away at a hospital in Mumbai on Wednesday.
Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art and Culture and Languages officials confirmed the news of her demise.
Sachdev who was known as the first modern woman to write poems in Sogri languages was born in 1940 to Sanskrit Scholar Prof Jai Dev Badu. As per reports she was admitted to the hospital on Tuesday evening as she developed some complications.
The late author had written many books and poetry in Dogri and Hindi language. One of her most famous works is Meri Kavita Mere Geet which won her the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1971.
In 2001, Padma Sachdev was awarded the fourth-highest civilian award, Padma Shri for her works in literature. The Madhya Pradesh government bestowed her with the Kabir Samman award for poetry for the year 2007-08.
Sachdev has also contributed to films as she wrote the lyrics of the song Mera Chhhota Sa Ghar Baar in 1973 for the film Prem Parbat. For the Hindi film Aankhin Dekhi, she wrote two songs. One of them was a duet by Sulakshana Pandit and Mohd Rafi titles Sona Re Tujhe Kaise Milun.
The author had worked for the All India Radio Jammu and Mumbai. She shifted to New Delhi after marrying singer Surinder Singh.
A condolence meeting in her Sachdev's name was chaired by Arvinder Singh Aman, the Additional Secretary of Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages. Aman said in his statement, "Sachdev’s contribution to Dogri language is exemplary. She was a living example of Dogri culture.”
The secretary added that Sachdev will be remembered for popularising the Dogri language as her lyrics were sung by famous Bollywood singers.
Padma Sachdev Sachdev will also be remembered for her significant role in getting the Dogri language added to the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.
