Olympic silver-medallist P V Sindhu has advanced to the quarterfinals of the women's singles in the China Super Series Premier. The seventh seed had a rough three-game win over USA's Beiwen Zhang in the second round with 18-21 22-20 21-17 today.
The battle lasted for an hour and Sindhu will next face off China's He Bingjiao. This would be a crucial game for Sindhu because she had lost against Bingjiao in the second round of the French Open Super Series last month.

The American did not get a chance in front of Sindhu as she led the first round with 11-7 but soon Zhang levelled the scores at 13-13. At the end of the first game, Zhang scored 18-15 and led before reeling off the last three points in to pocket the first game. In the second game, Sindhu stroked back and took a lead of 22-20 and ensured there was no gap this time. Back in the game, in the decider, Sindhu held a slender 8-6 lead and then broke off at 9-9, later took a 21-17 lead and never worried again.

On the other hand, male singles shuttler Ajay Jayaram has also progressed to the quarterfinals by beating Wei Nan as he notched up a 20-22 21-19 21-12 win over the Hong Kong shuttler in a 56-minute clash.
