Recently, the Central Railway Board gave its approval to the Maharashtra Government’s decision of allowing women passengers to travel in local trains of Mumbai. Now, amidst the rising coronavirus cases in the state, the railway department of the state said that only women passengers are allowed in the local trains and not children.
In October, the Central Railway Board had allowed women to travel in local trains between 11 am to 3 pm and after 7 pm in Mumbai & Mumbai Metropolitan Region. However, it was noticed that a large number of women passengers crowded the trains as they travelled with their children. Amidst the surge in the coronavirus cases in Maharashtra, the crowd in the local trains have become a matter of concern.

The DRM Mumbai Central WR took to Twitter to express the concern. The tweet read, “Railway Board has only permitted the ladies passengers to travel in local trains during the stipulated hours over Mumbai Metropolitan region. However, it has been noticed that women passengers are travelling with their Child/Children.”

Consequently, Mumbai Central reiterated that children are not allowed in the local trains. "In view of above, it is once again reiterated that only ladies are allowed during the timing stipulated and not children,” the tweet read. Moreover, the DRM has ordered the appointment of RPF at each entry gates who will prohibit women travelling with children from boarding the trains.

depute RPF at each entry gate and issue necessary instructions to restrict the
entry of the children at the entrance it self.
Maharashtra is currently witnessing a surge in coronavirus cases. As of today, more than 6,000 fresh COVID-19 cases have been reported, pushing the total number of COVID-19 cases in the state to 18,02,365. The local train services which were shut down under the nationwide lockdown on March 23, 2020, opened partially on June 15. It was allowed to run for the passengers involved in essential services and who carried a special pass to travel. However, from November 1, a total of 610 more local train services started running and were open to the general public. Following social distancing, possession of special travel pass and other preventive measures are mandatory.
