One-Fourth Of Hyderabad Women Suffering From PCOS: Study

Twenty-five per cent of women living in Hyderabad are suffering from PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome). According to gynaecologists, the hormonal disorder is more prevalent among women employed in the IT sector.

Twenty-five per cent of women living in Hyderabad are suffering from PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome). According to gynaecologists, the hormonal disorder is more prevalent among women employed in the IT sector.

A lot of factors like urban lifestyle, stress and irregular periods have been attributed to the recent surge in PCOS cases.

"Cases of PCOS are predominantly seen in the age group of 15 to 40 years. This was not the case some time back," Dr S Shanta Kumari, secretary, Indian College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists, told TOI.

Private practitioner Dr Sucharita expressed her concern over the lack of awareness about PCOS among women since a lot of them link irregular periods to stress.

Dr Vindhya Gemaraju, consultant gynaecologist with Care Hospital, said, "Currently, we get around 10 to 15 cases of women suffering from PCOS a week. Many teenage girls are suffering from PCOS. The main reason is sedentary lifestyle, but it can also be hereditary."

The presence of PCOS in women is an issue of great concern. Besides affecting the women's health, PCOS can also lead to infertility in some women.

According to a study conducted by All India Institute of Medical Sciences, one out of every four women in India suffers from PCOS. In another study, it was found that 18.62 % women in North India and 18% in South India were affected by this disease.
