Post the #UberRape, cab service providers across the capital are facing a crises. Where it is believed that government may ban all mobile-app based cab services, some companies are trying hard to stay in business. Up until last week, Cabs were seen as the safest mode of transportation after daylight hours by women. Even though this notion has now changed, there still isn’t any other safe option available for women.
Ola Cabs, India's largest taxi-app aggregator, claims to be taking high security measures. Bhavish Aggarwal co-founder of Ola cabs, in an interview with the Economic Times, said that his company has been actively installing GPS in all their vehicles and are extremely thorough with background checks.
With over 50,000 drivers working for the company, Aggarwal insists that security is their biggest concern. In the same interview, he said, “We are proactively getting GPS devices fitted in every car in addition to the phone- based GPS device we already have. We have also initiated thorough background verification checks for every driver on the platform and are working with local police authorities to complete this at the earliest.”
According to another report, Ola cabs is in the process of launching a "by women, for women" line of taxis soon. The biggest problem however, is that the women-driven cab services, that started in the past few years, have not picked up in revenue. This seems to be a shocking bit of information as most people in the country believed that women-driven cabs might give Indian women the safest mode of transport. A report by the Times of India, also confirms that the company claims to be working towards ensuring thorough background checks.
