The decision to not marry a groom since he turned up drunk at his wedding, proved to be good for a 20-year-old bride, Mamata Bhoi of Odisha. The bride has been felicitated by Odisha’s Sambalpur district administration for her step that required a lot of courage. Speaking at the programme held on Wednesday, Bhoi said “When I saw the man in an inebriated condition at the wedding mandap, I immediately took the decision not to marry him. The man was even unable to stand as he was heavily drunk. I realised that I could not lead a happy life with such a man... I instantly took the decision and I don't think that I have done anything wrong.”
Although her decision left her family surprised, they still stood by her. “By refusing to marry a drunkard, Mamata gave a message to all the girls that they should be very particular while selecting their spouse. She also gave the message to the all the girls that their life would be hell if they get married to drunkard,” said Sambalpur SP, Sanjeev Arora. Her wedding has now been fixed with a man from Brajarajnagar.

The programme was organised jointly by the district administration and the department of social security and empowerment of persons with disabilities along with the excise department. Bhoi has been presented with a shawl, a citation and Rs 10,000.
Not only her but there have been other brides too who dared to cancel their weddings because of the groom being inappropriate. Last year, Priyanka Tripathi cancelled her wedding after she saw her to-be-husband doing a Naagin dance at the wedding. Even though the groom’s family tried to convince her to marry Anubhav Mishra, the adamant bride refused. The groom had to then shamefacedly return home with his family. At one point, the skirmish threatened to get violent, and so the police were also called. The incident occurred in Shahjahanpur in UP.
In 2017, another badass bride had called off her own wedding after she found out that her fiancé failed a drug test.
In 2017, another badass bride had called off her own wedding after she found out that her fiancé failed a drug test. 22-year-old Sunita Singh simply refused to marry Jaspreet. “She was adamant not to marry Jaspreet as she suspected him of being a drug addict,” a relative, who did not want to be named, told Hindustan Times.
Another bride had decided to not marry the groom after some drunk members of his family threw a stone at her brother. It all started when a few drunk people from the groom’s side got into a brawl during a dance and someone hit the bride’s brother with a stone. The brawl was quickly sorted out and the wedding rituals continued. It was then that a second altercation broke out and the girl’s brother was once again beaten up. Outraged by the behaviour of groom’s family members, the bride called off the wedding. Interestingly, the villagers were praising her for her stand.
