Parbati Ghosh, a veteran Odia actress, producer and director, passed away in Bhubaneswar early on Monday (Feb 12) after a prolonged illness. She was 85.
She had not been keeping well for a long time. After she complained of unease, she was rushed to a private hospital. Admitted at around 12.30 am, she breathed her last after a few minutes.

Know about her:
- Ghosh was born 1933, in Manasinghpatana in Cuttack.
- She was conferred with the national film award for her stellar performances in films 'Laxmi', 'Kaa' and 'Stree'.
- Known as Chapala Nayak, she was later rechristened as Parbati Ghosh after she married producer-director Gauraprasad Ghosh.
- Ghosh was also presented the prestigious Jayadev Puraskar and Bioscope Award.
- She had acted and directed the film ‘Chha Mana Atha Guntha’, based on the famous novel of Fakir Mohan Senapati.
- Ghosh directed ‘Sansaar,’ ‘Samadhan’ among many others. She has also made several short films, documentaries and music videos.
Describing Ghosh as an icon and one of the greatest gifts to Odia cinema industry, chief minister Naveen Patnaik in a statement said, “I am deeply shocked at the passing away of the veteran film personality. She was an actor, director and producer at the same time.”
“In the early days of Odia cinema, she singlehandedly uplifted Odia cinema to a new level. She was really a symbol of woman empowerment when ideas like empowerment were unheard of. Her departure is a great loss to our industry and the world of silver screen. She will always be remembered for her contribution to Odia cinema,” he said.
