In a shocking incident, a 32-year-old NRI was smothered to death by her in-laws, who wanted to claim her hefty life insurance money. The deceased woman, Rajdeep Kaur, was a US citizen originally belonging to Punjab. She was called back from the US on the pretext of a relative's wedding. Kaur was killed in Kapurthala's Nano Mallian village on January 19.
Kaur, who was also the mother of a five-year-old boy, came to Kapurthala on January 12 and was killed by her in-laws, Daljit Kaur and Jagdev Singh, a few days later. Her husband, Majinder Singh, has been living in the US illegally and is hoping to get a green card.
Body in the Freezer for Two Days
Reportedly, the family had hidden Kaur's body in a freezer at Sidhwa Dona village for two days before informing Sultanpur Lodhi Police. On January 23, Kaur's body was sent for a post-mortem, which revealed "asphyxia due to smothering" as the cause of her death. While her husband claimed that Kaur died of a heart attack, one of her relatives said that she suffocated due to the gas coming out of the room heater.
"It is believed the woman was murdered as she had hefty life insurance coverage," Sultanpur Lodhi DSP, Babandeep Singh, said. The police have also charged the husband for being involved in the crime.
Kaur's Mother Files a Complaint
Someone informed Kaur's parents, who resided in the US, over the telephone. Kaur's mother, Nirmal Kaur, rushed back to India to learn more about the tragic incident. On January 25, Nirmal lodged a complaint at the police station. She alleged that Kaur was constantly being pressured and tortured by her husband to transfer all her property to his name for immigration purposes.
On Saturday, the police finally lodged an FIR against Kaur's in-laws and her husband.
