Reports suggest when the video first surfaced, many linked it to the alleged death by suicide of a Nagaland woman in Jodhpur, Rajasthan. The Naga woman died Sunday morning, as per Eastern Mirror Nagaland, which also reported that post-mortem records termed her death "natural."
Alleged relations between the Naga woman's death in Jodhpur and the sexual assault caught on camera were refuted Wednesday by Youth and Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju.
"The viral video of a girl from North-East being brutally raped and tortured by 4 men & 1 women is not related to Jodhpur suicide case. Meghalaya Police has also taken cognisance of the assault video, Congress MLA Ampareen Lyngdoh wrote on Facebook, Wednesday.
"I have spoken with the Director General of Police – Meghalaya Police to enquire and verify with his counterpart in the Rajasthan Police with regard to unconfirmed news regarding the sexual assault of a lady alleged to be from the North-East. On Thursday evening, six people, including two women, were arrested by the Bengaluru police in connection with the case. Bengaluru Commissioner of Police Kamal Pant said, "Based on contents of video & preliminary probe, case of rape & assault registered against 6 persons including 2 women at Ramamurthynagar PS. A police team deputed to adjoining state to trace victim so she could join investigation."
