Nodeep Kaur Case: Activist To Remain In Jail After Getting Bail In 1 Case

Nodeep Kaur Case: Nodeep Kaur, a 23-year-old Dalit labourer union activist who was arrested at Singhu Border in January is to remain in jail after getting bail in one out three cases filed against her. The next hearing of her case is scheduled on Saturday this week.

Nodeep Kaur was arrested by Haryana police on January 12 and many charges such as extortion, rioting with weapons, hurting a public servant and others were filed against her. This is the first her bail plea has been partially accepted. Her sister Rajveer Kaur, PhD student had alleged along with Kaur's lawyer that Nodeep is being assaulted in police custody. A medication examination claims that Kaur has wounds on her body including the private parts.

US President Kamala Harris' niece and lawyer Meena Harris had come out in Nodeep Kaur's support as she tweeted about her alleged unlawful detention. This highlighted the issue on social media and several social media users started to ask for Nodeep Kaur's release.

Nodeep Kaur Case:

Nodeep Kaur is a member of Mazdoor Adhikar Sangathan, a labour union standing in support of farmers in their protests against the new farm laws introduced by the centre. Kaur along with many members of her union joined the protests at Singhu border in December 2020. One month later, she was arrested from her tent by the Haryana police without any information to her family members. Later the police charged her with many offences including the attempt to murder. Her sister Rajveer Kaur was reported saying, "The government is afraid of the unity of workers of farmers and that is why my sister is being targeted."  The police have denied all allegation of assault as "concocted"

Sonipat police in a statement about Nodeep Kaur case said, "The allegations of sexual assault seem to be an afterthought and the police department clearly negates them. Also, Kaur was constantly in the presence of two women personnel."
