Newborn Found Dead Inside School Toilet At Tamil Nadu, Probe Underway

Police are looking into whether the child was born in the school's restroom or if someone accidentally dumped the newborn baby boy there.

On December 7 in Trichy, Tamil Nadu, a newborn infant was discovered inside a government school's premises. After being brought to the hospital, the baby was pronounced dead by the medical staff. The police are looking into this after filing a case in connection with it.

The newborn boy was only a few hours old when he was discovered inside a public school. The infant was discovered dead inside the school's washroom in the Kattur neighbourhood of Trichy, close to Thiruverumbur.

On Wednesday evening, when Shantha, a sanitary worker at the school, went to the bathroom and discovered the baby. She informed the headmistress, E Thenmozhi. Police were notified by the school's headmistress. In the police complaint, she said, “When the school sanitary worker Shantha entered the toilet, she found an unknown newborn male baby there with bloody injuries."

When the complainant received the information, he sent it to the hospital in Trichy, but the doctor declared it to be dead. According to Section 174 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, the police have filed a case regarding this incident. Police are looking into whether the child was born in the school's restroom or if someone accidentally dumped the newborn baby boy there.

The police are also looking into additional angles. The lack of CCTV surveillance at the school also slowed down the case's progression. The police stated that they were also looking into the possibility of any minor girl becoming pregnant and giving birth.

In the meantime, forensic specialists were brought in to analyse the scene for clues. Following the discovery of the incident, representatives from the Adi Dravidar Welfare Department, Tehsildar Chandra Devanathan, and the School Education Department arrived on the scene and launched an investigation.  In order to prevent such unfortunate incidents, parents of students at the school have now demanded that sufficient security guards be hired there and that CCTV cameras be installed.

In a related incident from the previous year, a newborn baby girl's body was found in a flush tank at the Thanajvur Medical College in December.
