Amid the COVID-19 Pandemic and fresh worries sparked due to a new strain of Coronavirus confirmed in the UK, several state governments across have planned to impose precautionary measures. These restrictions are likely to dampen the New Year 2021 revelries across the country. However, it is still not time to drop our guard in this fight against the virus.
The government has enacted certain precautionary measures to prevent large gatherings of people and further control the spread of the deadly disease. The restrictions will hit New Year's Eve celebrations and impose night curfew along with Section 144 in many parts, with several authorities likely to announce a complete ban on New Year's parties. Meanwhile, efforts are still in the process to trace passengers returned from the UK in recent days.

- Mumbai (Maharashtra)
Mumbai will see no New Year party this time as the civic body has imposed a seven-hour night curfew from 11 pm to 6 am up to 5th January 2021. The government has appealed to children below the age of 10 years and senior citizens over 60 years to avoid venturing outdoors on the event on New Year's Eve for safety concerns. Moreover, the holding of religious or cultural rallies is strictly prohibited.
Strict actions will be taken against restaurants, pubs, and other recreational establishments operating beyond 11 pm on 31st December 2020. Individuals are expected to follow COVID-19 protocols of social distancing, wearing a mask, and only 4 people allowed in a group. Organisers hosting parties on terraces and boats will be punished for violations.

- Delhi-NCR
The national capital will see similar restrictions for New Year's Eve Celebration as the Delhi Police have warned against any public events or terrace parties. Up to 100 people will be allowed at a venue for New Year’s Eve parties this year in Noida, the district administration and police department have said. Hotel and restaurant owners and clubs organising events in Gautam Budh Nagar on December 31 will have to obtain permission from the district magistrate or commissioner of police (CP).

- Hyderabad (Telangana)
Hyderabad will see all new year's events between 8 pm on December 31 to 1 am on January 1. The Hyderabad police have issued strict rules to follow on 31st December 2020 and have warned hotels, resorts, and farmhouses of strict action if any violation is reported.
The Outer Ring Road (ORR) will only be opened for passengers bound to and from the airport. However, it will be closed from 10 pm on December 31 to 5 am on January 1.

- Bengaluru (Karnataka)
While Karnataka is bound to night curfew between 11 pm and 5 am from December 24 till January 1, families are allowed to have their private celebration but no public events will be allowed. Building societies and clubs have been restricted to public celebrations and a maximum of 4 people can be allowed in a group. However, Hotels, malls, restaurants, and clubs can continue on their daily activity but there will be no allowance for special events like DJ, parties, or events.

The prohibitory orders have been revised. Sec 144 will be effective from 12 PM today (Dec 31) to 6 AM tomorrow (Jan 1, 2021).
Conditions/restrictions notified in the original order remain the same.

- Jaipur (Rajasthan)
The Rajasthan government has also imposed a night curfew on December 31 in all cities having a population of more than one lakh. While organizing the New Year party is strictly prohibited, bursting of firecrackers in the name of celebration is banned. According to an order issued by the Home Department, individuals have to abide by the rules from 8 pm on December 31 to 6 am on January 1.

- Chennai (Tamil Nadu)
There is no curfew in Tamil Nadu restaurants, pubs, clubs, and resorts. They are allowed to function normally provided they abide by the Covid-19 guidelines. However, resorts located along the two main highways in Chennai, East Coast Road (ECR) and Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR) are restricted from organising New Year's Eve parties due to the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions. Guests staying at resorts along ECR or OMR will be allowed to take these routes only until 10 pm on December 31 with the support of valid ID proof. Parties on beaches, farmhouses, and hotels are restricted.
Moreover, the Marina Beach will remain shut for the public on New Year's Eve.
- Kolkata (West Bengal)
Authorities of Kolkata have issued similar rules for New Year celebrations. Pubic functions on the Eve of New Year's have been themed on the farmers’ ongoing protest against the three farm laws while others on the anti-CAA protests. However, Kolkata will follow the Centre’s Standard COVID-19 safety protocols.

- Dehradun (Uttarakhand)
The district administration in Dehradun has issued orders to avoid public gatherings on Eve. All pubs, bars, and restaurants in Dehradun, Mussoorie, and Rishikesh have to follow the rules. Violators are bound to face action under the Disaster Management Act, 2005, and the Epidemic Diseases Act along with other relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
- Punjab
Punjab is under the restrictions of an existing night curfew between 10 pm to 5 am which is likely to continue till January 1, 2021. On December 11, The Punjab government issued guidelines restricting indoor gatherings in the state up to 100 people whereas outdoor gatherings up to 250 people.
- Odisha
Strict restrictions have been imposed by the authorities in Odisha's Cuttack and Bhubaneswar for the celebration on New Year's Eve. Gatherings at pubs, hotels, or restaurants are fully banned and authorities have directed citizens to welcome the New Year inside their homes.
