Chitra Ghosh passes away

Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose's niece Chitra Ghosh passed away on 7 January at the age of 90. She was the youngest daughter of Bose's brother Sarat Chandra Bose. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bose’s grandnephew Chandra Kumar Bose paid their tributes to Ghosh on social media.

“Professor Chitra Ghosh made pioneering contributions to academics and community service. I recall my interaction with her, when we discussed many subjects including declassification of files relating to Netaji Bose. Saddened by her demise. Condolences to her family. Om Shanti,” ‘PM Modi tweeted today.

Chandra Kumar Bose tweeted that Chitra Ghosh had dedicated her life towards serving people and teaching and inspiring the youth.

Who Was Chitra Ghosh? 

Professor Chitra Ghosh was a social scientist and academician who was born to Sarat Chandra and Bivabati Bose. She was a teacher who had studied Political Science and Economics and was associated with the Education Service of the Government of West Bengal. She had also served as a lecturer in Calcutta University, Jadavpur University and the Netaji Institute for Asian Studies in Calcutta.

Chitra Ghosh also served as the president of Political Science Association which backed human rights causes. She also worked on women rights issues with the United Nations. Besides that, Chitra Ghosh had also implemented two successful projects to uplift and empower the socially backward classes. Project 5-O in Thakurpukur and Women’s Voluntary Services(WVS) in East Calcutta worked towards giving underprivileged children primary education and imparting vocational training to women and helping them to support themselves.

Chitra Ghosh had also authored books which shed light on issues like women rights, politics, etc. Some of her other works include The Rights and Obligations of Indian Women, Women’s Studies in India, Women and Politics World Wide(IPSA), Women Movement Politics in Bengal, The World of Thai Women(1990), Opening of Closed Windows(2002).
