The National Commission for Women (NCW) started a helpline on April 29, exclusively dedicated towards catering to the needs of helpless women.
Since its launch, the NCW helpline has received over 648 calls for help from pregnant women. The helpline was launched as part of the #HappyToHelp campaign.
"Till today, the helpline has saved 648 such pregnant women and their babies," said NCW Chairperson, Rekha Sharma.
"In its initial days, the helpline received several requests for plasma after which we called for people who have recovered from Covid to come forward and donate plasma," she added.
Rekha Sharma then said that people reacted in a positive manner, to the NCW's call, to save two lives by donating plasma. Now the NCW helpline currently has many plasma donors, from different parts of the country, who have agreed to help.
There was one case where a 29-year-old pregnant woman from Bengaluru was in dire need of a ventilator. A request for the sane was sent to the helpline at midnight.
Sharma said that the NCW's top officials, district health officer, police commissioner, and many others got involved in procuring a ventilator for the woman. The NCW team even reached out to the health minister's office for help. Finally, the ventilator was successfully arranged for the patient after a tough, night-long battle. The woman was subsequently shifted to the ICU.
There was another case in which a 30-year-old, pregnant woman from Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, was desperately looking for an ICU for herself. With regards to the incident, Rekha Sharma said that her team contacted the authorities, and got the woman shifted to a ventilator. Later, her family informed them that the woman had given birth to a baby girl.
