Inspired by her grandmother's battle with stroke and armed with her experiences from STEM NOLA, a program aimed at empowering young minds in STEM, Naya embarked on a mission to create a device that could detect strokes early, potentially saving lives.
She said, "I love the fact that you're bringing new life into the world, that's the coolest thing ever to me. I'm a woman helping women. It can't get any better than that!".
From Concept to Reality: The Birth of WingItt
Initially drawn to the idea of detecting seizures, Naya's focus eventually shifted to stroke detection—a decision influenced by her grandmother's medical history. The result of her dedication and ingenuity is WingItt, a watch that harnesses cutting-edge technology to monitor nerve impulses and heartbeats, effectively identifying early signs of stroke.
Recognising the prevalence of strokes among adults over 55, Naya designed WingItt with this demographic in mind. However, her ultimate goal is to make the device accessible to everyone, regardless of age or socioeconomic status. By prioritising affordability, she aims to democratize access to life-saving healthcare technology.
A Vision for the Future
For Naya, innovation is not merely about creating something new—it's about making a meaningful impact. Her aspiration to change the world through her inventions is evident in her unwavering commitment to addressing real-world health challenges.
With her victory in the National STEM Challenge, Naya's star continues to rise. As one of over 2,500 students recognized for their ingenuity, she is set to showcase WingItt at the prestigious National STEM Challenge festival in Washington, D.C. This platform not only celebrates her achievements but also opens doors to future opportunities in STEM.
