Navi Mumbai: 15-Year-Old Girl Strangulates Mother After Rift Over NEET Studies

Navi Mumbai girl kills mother, tries to pass it off as suicide: In Navi Mumbai's Aeroli, a 15-year-old girl, who is an MBBS aspirant, allegedly killed her mother at their residence on July 30. Rabale police have registered a case against the minor girl who committed the crime by allegedly strangulating her 42-year-old mother to death with a karate belt after they quarreled over her preparations for the National Eligibility and Entrance Test (NEET) medical entrance exam, the police said on Monday (August 9).

The girl was reportedly living with her mother, who is a homemaker, father, who works as a senior engineer with a private company and six-year-old brother. The parents of the juvenile wanted her to become a doctor, thus had enrolled her in the NEET preparation classes. On July 27, she and her father had a tiff over using her phone too much following which she left the house and went to her uncle’s house nearby. The mother then asked her to come back and they fought again. The daughter meanwhile said that she was frustrated and harassed over the studies and would go to the police station to file a complaint against them. The mother and daughter then went directly to the police station, after which the police counselled them and sent them home. On July 30, the mother reportedly started shouting at her again and threatened her with a knife. The girl’s father had gone to meet his sister in Thane.

According to the officials, the girl was frightened that the mother was going to kill her and she pushed her following which the mother got a head injury as it hit the corner of a cot. Her semi-conscious mother then tried to grab a karate belt that was lying nearby but the girl grabbed it first and reportedly strangulated the woman till she died. After this incident, the 15-year-old tried to portray it as an attempt to suicide but the autopsy report confirmed “asphyxial (inability to breathe) death due to strangulation with head injury," TOI reported.

After committing the crime, the girl then sent out a WhatsApp message from her mother’s phone to her father and maternal uncle saying ‘I tried everything I quit’. According to the FIR, she claimed her mother locked herself inside the bedroom, ostensibly to pass off the crime as a suicide. After a week of investigation, the girl finally confessed to the crime. A senior inspector said as the girl is a minor, she has been sent to the juvenile remand home.
