Naomi Osaka on Yoshiro Mori: Grand Slam champion Noami Osaka on Saturday weighed in on the sexist comments made by the head Tokyo Olympics organising committee and called him 'ignorant'.
Yoshiro Mori recently made sexist remarks when he said that women talk too much. He said that women have a strong sense of rivalry and if one speaks something all the other women feel the need to speak. He used this to imply that if more women were to become board members, " we have to regulate speaking time to some extent or else we'll never be able to finish"
This sparked a major debate on social media as many asked him to resign from the Japan Olympics Committee. Mori later apologised for his statement but he refused to step down.
Naomi Osaka on Yoshiro Mori's comments:
Naomi Osaka, who is going to represent Japan in the upcoming Olympics game made her statement regarding the matter in a press conference. She said, " I did look at the comments. I didn't think they were good."
She admitted that she is unaware of the context in which Mori said those things but she said," I think if you're in a position like that, you really should think before you say anything."
"I don't know in what situation he said those things, but I think it's really uninformed and a bit ignorant," she added. When asked if she feels that Mori should resign over this, she said, "I'm not sure if it's a situation where someone should demand that he resigns or if it's just something that people need to make him understand that what he said wasn't right."
She also said that people who make such comments should have more knowledge of the thing they are talking about.
Naomi Osaka is a 23-year-old tennis player of Japanese origin and was raised in the United States of America. In the past, she has been vocal about her opinions of political matters such as the Black Lives Matters movement.
