It's the first child for the 50-year-old model, who made no public announcement about expecting a baby. Campbell's mom, Valerie Morris Campbell, also confirmed the news on Instagram by saying, "I'm beyond thrilled as I've waited for a long time to be a grandmother." British Vogue editor Edward Enninful congratulated the new mother writing, "Seeing the two of you together made my year. You will bring each other so much joy." Campbell made her first catwalk in 1986 and became the first Black model to appear on the covers of French Vogue and Time magazine. She was also the first Black model on the cover of US Vogue's key September issue.
The model had said in the past that she wanted to be a mother. In an interview in 2017, she spoke to the Evening Standard about wanting to conceive a baby rather than adopting. "I think about having children all the time...But now with the way science is I think I can do it when I want," she had said.
Earlier, refuting retirement rumours, she wrote in an essay for the book Naomi. Updated Edition, "'Retire' isn't a word I ever want to use."
"'Chill out' maybe, but 'retire' never," she added.
Campbell, who is one of the most recognizable supermodels in the world, is also known for her charity work and philanthropy.
