My mom's sacrifices have brought me where I am: Narendra Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi spent a large part of his townhall at Facebook's headquarters in Menlo Park talking about women empowerment and later personalised his talk with a leaf from his own story. Modi is moved to tears while talking about the struggles of his mother while raising him: "My parents took a lot of pain to raise me. From washing clothes to cleaning utensils. I am close to my mother for she has sacrificed a lot for me. And this is not in the case of just Narendra Modi. A mother will never want you to become something, she will think about how you will achieve that."

Modi was attending to several questions on women equality and empowerment in India. Modi asserted on the need to make women central to decision making in all aspects of economic policy and pitched for more gender fairness efforts in India. He shared the country’s initiatives to support gender equality. He noted that India was uniquely positioned as a country where many of its gods are women (Lakshmi, Saraswati, Kaali and many more). He used the analogy to suggest India has worshipped women for years and that there was efforts to make the country more aware of gender equality through various government movements.

Citing programs reserving places in goverment for women, offering financial support through housing only if women are the primary home operator, and the Beti Padhao, Beti Bachao campaign, Modi said India was making progress.
