Singer and songwriter, Sahana Bajpayie, recently posted a strong message on her Facebook account condemning lewd messages. She also attached screenshots where a man named Debendra Basu has commented very crassly in Bengali about Bajpayie. The comment Basu made is under a song that Bajpayie sung with another musician, Samantak.
“A lot of people have asked us to delete the post and let it go except a few concerned friends who helped us out. Why should I be ashamed or afraid instead of the person who committed the crime? This very attitude has, in essence, made us vulnerable to heinous crimes.”
Samantak posted the video of the song a few days ago from his profile. After just one comment from Bajpayie herself, Basu felt the need to sexualize her identity and pass a vulgar comment on her.

In her post, Bajpayie said that she has lodged a complaint against her harasser under the cyber crime cell of Kolkata. “The police is in process of arresting the criminal involved.”
She added, “A lot of people have asked us to delete the post and let it go, except a few concerned friends who helped us out. Why should I be ashamed or afraid instead of the person who committed the crime? This very attitude has, in essence, made us vulnerable to heinous crimes.”
She also pointed out how she has been repeatedly sexually targeted in her inbox.

Bajpayie deals with sexual abuse on social media the way it should be dealt. Publicly shaming the person who has tried to malign another person’s dignity is the right way to deal with such crimes.
Talking to SheThePeople.TV about the incident, "I didn't think twice before posting on my Facebook because this has happened to me before under my YouTube videos. So, I did not care because there are many atrocities happening with women in our country today. And that too not just online, but offline too. So I thought if I write about it, then more people will get to know about it. And it will encourage more women to report their issues too."
"How I see it, is that when my daughter is growing up, I will tell her that don't tell anyone on the internet what you can't tell upfront," she added.
With the rise in social media in our lives, cyber crimes and bullying have been increasing rapidly. This calls for a strict framework to take those people to task who find it okay to sit behind a screen and sexually abuse another person. And this happens with women for no particular reason.
Such cases are a sort of roadside eve-teasing in the online world. And as much as we need to stand up against molestation in public space, it is equally important to raise your voice on social media.
