The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) declared yesterday that schools and colleges in Mumbai will remain shut "until further orders". The announcement comes after the one made by the state Education Minister Varsha Gaikwad on Friday, instructing for reopening schools in Maharashtra from January 27 for classes five to eight.

The statement issued by the BMC said that while the COVID-19 situation is under control in the city, with the growing cases in other parts of the world and the possible risk involved, it was decided to keep the schools and colleges shut until further notice. According to the guidelines issued by BMC authorities previously, city schools were asked to remain shut till January 15.
On the other hand, Gaikwad tweeted yesterday about Maharashtra's plans to reopen schools from January 27, for classes five to eight, state-wide.

Several states are in the process of reopening schools after they were shut in March 2020 due to the lockdown enforced to contain cases of COVID-19. In January 2021 itself, it was reported that Tamil Nadu is set to reopen schools from January 19, for classes 10 and 12. As per the standard operating procedure laid by the government, a maximum of 25 students are to be seated in a classroom.
