Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar Gets Death Threat: Report

After the mayor of Mumbai Kishori Pednekar filed a complaint with the police on the remarks made by the Bharatiya Janata Party MLA Ashish Shelar, Pednekar reportedly received a threatening letter at her residence at Byculla on Friday. The police tracked the place the letter has been sent from.

The one-page letter has been allegedly posted from Uran, which is 19 kilometres away from Byculla. It contains abusive language and threatens the Mayor. According to media reports, Pednekar said that she was shocked at the language it was written in and as a woman could not bring herself to read any further. The letteris written in Marathi.

She also alleged that in the letter, the person threatened to kill her and her family. She also said that the letter came from a person called Vijendra Mhatre from Uran. Although the dispatch is from Panvel and the recipient's address is of her previous home.

Showing confidence in the Mumbai Police, she said that they will definitely reach the culprit and look into the matter at hand. Pednekar informed the media that the letter has been taken "into police custody."

According to the Times of India report, the letter was in abusive language and threatened to shoot Pednekar. Talking about the name on the letter, a police officer said that it can be a  pseudo name. However, the police are investigating and the person is going to be charged with criminal intimidation.

Two days ago, Pednekar had filed a complaint against the MLA Ashish Shelar. Before that, the State Commission for Women Rupali Chakankar also asked the Mumbai Police Commissioner to take action against the public representative.

Ashish Shelar while commenting on the Worli cylinder blast case which claimed the lives of three people in a family said, "The Mumbai Mayor visited (those injured in the blast) after 72 hours, where you (the mayor) sleeping for these many hours?" This was then aired by news media. The comment fumed the Commission chairperson and she directed the Mumbai Police Commissioner to file a factual report under sections 12(2) and 12(3) of the Maharashtra State Commission Act of 1993.
