Mumbai Girl Clinches Bronze At Junior Chess Meet In UK

Mumbai girl Ahana Shah has won a bronze medal with a score of 4 points out of 5 in the Under-7 category of the 2017 Kenilworth Junior Open Rapid Chess Tournament in the United Kingdom.

A student of the Dhirubhai Ambani International School in Mumbai, the seven-year-old managed to finish in third position in the tournament last weekend.

She was the only unrated participant competing with other boys and girls having an ECF rating as high as 36 and 42. This handicap, however, couldn't deter her from securing the third position.

Rithvik of Hallfield, and Dicen of St. Patrick’s Club, emerged winners and runner-up respectively.

Ahana was also the silver medalist in the under-6 category of the Maharashtra State Schools competition last year. She also clinched a bronze in the under-6 category of the National Age group chess championships category in Singapore.

It is great to see such young girls prove their mettle in the international sports arena. Last year, 15-year-old Aakanksha Hagawane won the under-16 gold medal at the World Youth Chess Championship, held in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia.

Nagpur-born Mrudul Dehankar won the under-12 girls’ silver medal last year. She has won the Maharashtra State Championship multiple times and even won a silver at the under-10 age group at the Asian Youth Championships.
