Mumbai Gets Its First "All-Women" Railway Station

Whenever you visit Mumbai's Matunga railway station next time, you will find the station is operated by an all-women staff.

According to a report, the Central Railway authorities have decided to hand over the reins of Matunga station to women staffers. Located in central Mumbai, Matunga is thronged by a lot of students due to its proximity to the colleges.

DK Sharma, General Manager, Central Railway is the man behind this noble initiative of empowering women.

Acknowledging the immaculateness with which some women have been working in the railway sector, he says “Some of our passenger reservation centres and even ticketing systems for suburban trains are entirely handled excellently by women, so it was decided that an entire station should be handed over to them.”

If everything works well, Sharma will chalk out a plan to deploy all-women crew at other stations of the network.

The station will have over 30 women staffers, including 11 booking clerks, 7 ticket collectors, 2 chief booking supervisors, 5 Railway Police Force personnel, 5 points persons, 2 announcers, and a station manager for supervising the activities of other staffers.

“We understand each other’s problems well, and cooperate better, so that makes work easier,” said one of the staffers at Matunga station.

Matunga will be the first station in Mumbai, and on the Central Railway, to be run by an all-women staff.

From the first city's woman station master being deployed in 1992 to a whole station being operated by women, the Railways have really come a long way.
