After a video of an MP farmer, Sardar Barela, using his daughters Radha 14, and Kunti 11, to plough the fields went viral, the Shivraj Singh Chouhan government has stepped in. The state government has given the poor farmer a below poverty line (BPL) card which will help him get access to farm equipment and oxen. They also re-admitted his daughter Radha to school. She had quit because of the financial constraints of the family, and the government will pay for her education.

Both the girls had quit school three years ago. "I didn't have money to pay for the school," Sardar Barela said.

Efforts are on to admit the younger daughter to school too.

The district in which the farmer lives, Sehore district, which is also the home district of the CM, has a higher proportion of people under the poverty line than the state’s average. And in the last month itself, 51 farmers committed suicide due to financial problems.

It was only after the video went viral, that the authorities helped.

Barela’s brother had requested the authorities for help earlier, but to no avail. The authorities turned a blind eye towards the poor farmer of MP. Even after the video went viral, their first reaction was to get defensive, saying that the farmer was encroaching on forest land.

Karnataka energy minister DK Sivakumar has also announced on Twitter that he is sending a cheque of Rs 50,000 for the MP farmer.
