Mother of Walayar Sisters: The mother of Walayar sisters, who were allegedly raped and hanged in their home in 2017, said on Tuesday that she will contest as an independent candidate against Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.
The woman decided to run for the CM seat in protest as she alleged "inaction" by the government. She had shaved her head in protest asking for justice for her daughters. The woman said, "I want justice for my daughters. I had met the Chief Minister at Thiruvananthapuram...cried and begged him to ensure that those responsible for the death of my children be brought to book."
She added, "I will contest against Mr Vijayan as an independent. Except for the Sangh Parivar, we will take the support of everyone."
Pinarayi Vijayan is seeking election from Dharmadam and filed his nomination on Monday. The mother of the two minor girls is currently on a "Neeti Yatra" travelling from Kasaragod to Thiruvananthapuram demanding action against the two police officers who probed the death of her daughters. The election campaign is scheduled to run till April 4.
From the BJP cadre, former state president CK Padmanabhan is running for the same seat, while Congress has still not revealed its candidate. Speaking about the woman contesting for the CM seat, KPCC part president Mullapally Ramachandran called it the right decision. Although when asked if Congress will support her candidature, he said, "we have to discuss it in the UDF and take a decision."
Walayar Sisters' death probe:
The state government in January handed over the case to CBI after Kerala High Court ruled on a retrial of the case. The state government along with the deceased girls' mother had appealed to the court. The court had ruled that there has been a "miscarriage of justice" in the case.
Earlier a POSCO court had acquitted five accused persons in the case because of lack of evidence. The eldest sister aged 13 was found hanging from the roof of the family's hut in Walayar on January 13 2017 and the younger one who was nine-year-old was found in the same state on March 4.
