Monson Mavunkal rape charges: A case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act was registered against jailed conman Monson Mavunkal for the alleged rape of a minor girl two years ago, reports said Tuesday. The survivor is reportedly the daughter of an employee who worked with Mavunkal and is suspected to be one of many girls he sexually abused.
Mavunkal, who was arrested September 26 by the Kerala Police on charges of fraud over the sale of fake antique items, allegedly abused the complainant - who was a minor at the time - on multiple occasions when she was seeking his guidance with college admissions, according to New Indian Express.
"Fearing that Monson is a very influential person with close association with politicians and bureaucrats, the family feared giving a complaint then," a police official was quoted saying.
The survivor and her mother took their complaint to the police on October 18, days following Mavunkal's arrest.
Monson Mavunkal Rape Case: What You Should Know
Antique dealer Mavunkal's case shook Kerala earlier this year after complaints that he cheated people of approximately ten crore rupees led to his arrest. As per reports, his centre in Kerala boasted of housing items belonging to figures like Prophet Mohammed and Tipu Sultan.
What raised eyebrows was that Mavunkal's social circle apparently comprised powerful people in police teams, politics, etc.
Following his arrest, a woman in Kochi alleged she faced blackmail and threats from Mavunkal whose friend she accused of sexual assault. She claimed Mavunkal was putting pressure on her to withdraw her complaint.
The case against Mavunkal under POCSO has been transferred to a special investigation team (SIT) that is investigating other charges against him, as per Hindustan Times. The SIT was constituted by the Pinarayi-led state government.
