Actor Mona Singh opened up about playing the role of the mother of Aamir Khan's character in Laal Singh Chaddha despite being 17 years younger than him. The age gap was criticised in the view that a younger female actor is chosen to play an older male actor's mother which has been a problematic scenario in many Bollywood films.
Bollywood films have had many problematic age gaps with male actor's in their 50's playing love interest of 20 something female actors. Another undeniable age gap issue is when female actors played mothers of elder or same age actors. Some common examples are Nargis in Mother India, Reema Lagoo in Vastav, Shefali Shah in Waqt and Sheeba Chaddha in Zero. Aamir Khan's latest movie Laal Singh Chaddha also had the same issue when actor Mona Singh, who is 40, played 57 years old Khan's mother. Mona Singh recently opened about what she thought about the age difference.

In a recent interview, Mona Singh expressed gratitude for all the appreciation she got for portraying the role of Gurpreet Kaur, Laal Singh Chaddha's mother in the movie. She also defended her role despite the age gap between her and Aamir and reportedly said, "There was the whole thing < debate> going on. I didn't want to talk about it before because I wanted people to see the movie. And I am an actor. I am not playing Aamir Khan's mother, I am playing Laal's mother. As Laal ages, I age in the movie. It is not an Aamir Khan biopic where he is 57 and I am 40 and playing a mother. That would be wrong."
She further said that when she first said yes to the role, she did not even think about the age gap and thought the audience too won't pay attention to it once they watched the film. She is also happy about choosing the role that gave her so much appreciation and wishes that she gets the opportunity to play more of such diverse roles, even if it means doing less movies and shows. She said she believes more in quality than quantity.
