The Pulitzer Prize is one of the most prestigious awards given to phenomenal journalists in the United States. The awards were held on May 8 this year and shining among the winners list was the name of leading Iraqi-British journalist Mona Chalabi.

The 36-year-old writer and data journalist Mona Chalabi won the Pulitzer Prize for Illustrated Reporting and Commentary on May 8 for her work titled 9 Ways To Imagine Jeff Bezos' Wealth. The literary piece throws light upon the immense wealth of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and the economic power he holds with his venture illustrated through statistical reporting and keen analysis.

Who Is Mona Chalabi?

  • Born and brought up in East London by Iraqi immigrant parents, Mona Chalabi is a graduate from University of Edinburgh and holds a master's degree from the Paris Institute of Political Studies in International Security.
  • Chalabi worked for the Bank of England, Five ThirtyEight, the International Organisation for Migration and the Economist Intelligence Unit before landing a job as a data editor at Guardian US.
  • As a data editor, she makes the understanding of complex data information simple using illustrations and sounds. She majorly works in Brooklyn and occasionally London and her work has featured in The New York Times and The New Yorker as well.
  • Her Pulitzer-winning article was also featured in The New York Times.
  • Chalabi's work has been presented at exhibitions in the Design Museum, the Tate and the House of Illustrations. Her 100 New Yorkers were presented at Westfield World Trade Center in 2020. The recipient of the Shorty Award for Best Journalist in Social Media, she was also named in the 40 Under 40 list by Fortune in 2020.
  • Chalabi has produced video series and documentaries for Netflix, BBC and National Geographic. Her 2016 documentary series titled Vagina Dispatches won a nomination for the 38th Annual News And Documentary Emmy Award.
  • She has also worked as a presenter, data expert and host for talk shows, TED talks like Alternative Election Night, The Business of Life and The Fix.
